Hawthorne Rotary Park
Hawthorne Rotary Park was transformed through a comprehensive landscape architecture and ecological restoration project commissioned by the City of Surrey. the redesign of this long-standing urban green space aims to enhance ecological function, accessibility, and community use. Central to the project was the creation of a new wetland habitat designed to manage stormwater naturally while supporting local biodiversity. Boardwalks, lookout decks, and interpretive signage were carefully integrated to guide visitors through sensitive ecological zones. A reimagined trail network—with accessible paths weaving through forest and meadow—now connects surrounding neighbourhoods and encourages active transportation. A major highlight of the redevelopment is the addition of a nature-inspired children’s play area and an interactive water splash park, designed to promote inclusive, sensory-rich play for children of all ages and abilities.
The broader design strategy prioritized long-term ecological resilience through the planting of over 250 trees and 14,000 native shrubs, significantly expanding the park's canopy and habitat diversity. Gathering spaces—including a central plaza, picnic zones, and a full basketball court—were strategically located based on community consultation to support multigenerational recreation. Custom site furnishings, pollinator gardens, and quiet seating areas were introduced to create moments of both activity and reflection. Through this redevelopment, Hawthorne Rotary Park has been redefined as a multifunctional, sustainable community hub—one that celebrates natural systems while providing vital outdoor amenities for families, children, and residents across the city.
The work was completed while Joe was serving as the Design Associate at PWL Partnership.
